Why we never use traditional floral foam

For the last 50 years floral foam has been the most commonly used means of keeping floral instillations, and arrangements fresh. The use of floral foam is commonplace and used by many (and maybe even most) florists in the United States. They hold flowers and foliage in a secure manner in just about any angle. Floral foam is pH balanced and keeps blooms hydrated for prolonging freshness. Sounds great however, they are composed of carcinogenic and toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde, barium sulfates, carbon black and plastic. Floral foam dissolves quite rapidly but is not biodegradable releasing these chemicals and microplastics into the environment. This makes them particularly dangerous to our water supply and aquatic animals. Water containing foam fragments are often poured down the sink or the onto the ground.

The great news is there are other options. Although they are not as convenient, things such as Agra-Wool, OshunPouch®, flower frogs, chickenwire, weaved branches, floral tubes and moss can all be used in creative ways to mimic floral foam. At Rune & Rose Floral Designs we value the health of the planet and everything living on it. We believe there is no place for a product that hurts our environment in an industry that comes from the beauty of our earth.
